Celebrate Metalwerx’s 15th Anniversary and Participate in our Vendor Day Scholarship Fundraiser

by Metalwerx on October 14, 2013

Metalwerx has much to be proud of as it celebrates its 15th birthday. The generously-equipped classroom is home to at least 75 workshops and 45 weekly classes per year.  Students come from all over the world to learn from some of the finest instructors around. The separate, dedicated Studiomate Community Studio is booked solid, with 17 full and part-time jewelry artists who pursue their metal dreams in an especially supportive environment.

Tuition and open studio rental income are the nonprofit school’s revenue stream. Raising funds beyond this helps fulfill Metalwerx’s mission, which includes supporting jewelry and metal arts through educational programming.  The school is fortunate to be able to award annual scholarships towards instruction, be it a week-long Masters workshop or a semester-long weekly class.

Metalwerx’s 9th annual Vendor Day is happening this Sunday at the Armenian Cultural and Educational Center in Watertown, MA, where attendees can find more than 25 providers of quality tools, gems, findings, displays, services and other amazing items. There also will be several educational lectures, snacks, and something new — an auction-style “Scholarship Fundraiser” to establish a nest egg for future scholarships.

Vendors have generously donated items such as jewelry how-to and art books, tools like Jayne Redman’s bench pin kit or the new Eid-Longhi anticlastic forming stake, and gems, from agates to moonstones to pearls to a matching pair of 13 million year-old petrified sand dollars. Auction bid tickets cost $5 each (or 5 for $20) and can be purchased with cash at the event.  All proceeds will directly benefit the scholarship fund.

Lindsay Minihan, executive director, has been with Metalwerx since 2006.  She says the school owes many thanks to the vision of its founders, Karen Christians and Jennifer “jeff” Bowie who had the courage and enthusiasm to take their vision and make it a reality.  To honor the groundwork laid by Karen and jeff, Metalwerx has named this year’s $500 scholarship, the Founders Scholarship. The Founders Scholarship application is available on Metalwerx’s website.

A full list of vendors, supplies, and the seminar schedule can be found on Metalwerx’s website, but we would especially like to acknowledge the following contributors to this year’s scholarship auction (pictures below).
