Mini-Bolt Cutters.

Leverage, says you. I think I feel a change in the wind, says I.
- Mr. Gibbs, Pirates of the Caribbean

Gotta say, these are some of the best cutters on the planet.  Coming from an background where cutting 4 gauge stainless steel wire was an everyday occurrence. I just happened to run across these many, many years ago.  Fortunately they are still in production, unfortunately you cannot pick them up at your local hardware store.

For those of you that have tired hands, and who of us doesn’t.  These high leverage cutters are great for everyday use.  I can cut 4 gauge stainless by hand with some effort, anything smaller is a piece of cake.  Using this on heavy silver is like taking a hot knife through butter.  They fit pretty comfortable in your average hand.  Roughly about $65USD for these, its a lot of money, but they pay for themselves in the long run.

Stepping Up to the Plate…

by patpruitt on April 27, 2011

Working with family…yeah, some of you know what I’m talking about.  Fortunately for me, my younger brother, Chris Pruitt, is coming into his own as an artist.  While we do have our brotherly spats from time to time, when it comes to working together, things tend to get done.

I will admit, I am not an organic materials sort of person.  Working with wood on past non-jewelry related projects has taught me a new found respect for all the woodworkers.  Same goes for lapidary artists, I just cant seem to grasp it…elusive it is for me.  For my brother on the other hand, he is truly talented in cutting, grinding, and polishing stones with precision that makes me jealous.

This is probably our third collaboration to date.  A Belt Buckle and Bolo set, commissioned by a Gallery that represents the both of us.  We always try to challenge our skill set when working on collaborative pieces, this was no exception.  All cut from Stainless Steel, Inliad with 24K Gold, Natural Lone Mountain Turquoise and Natural Coral.

Enjoy!

I’m just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round

April 30, 2010

really love to watch them roll -John Lennon Some of my work requires a lot of sanding, especially to get good flat planes.  I used my monster lathe with a flat disk on there for a lot of the sanding previous to this project.  Since Ill be getting rid of that lathe, it was time [...]

Belt Buckles – The Guy Manly Gift…

October 27, 2009

I noticed its been several months since last posting in the blog-o-sphere…well…Halloween is just around the corner and I have a cool belt buckle that has a skull, it just sort of makes sense… Buckles are one of those things every man should have…and most have at least one.  From my perspective, dealing in the [...]

New File sets for me….yea!

June 9, 2009

These were long overdue, but finally bit the bullet and got some new sets from Rio.  I do consider files to be a consumable with the work I do, and would like to get new ones on a more frequent basis.  The last set of diamond files (red handle) I bought almost a year ago [...]

Plasma Rough Cutting Stainless and Titanium

June 7, 2009

One of the downsides working with stainless and titanium, sheet size.  A full sheet of stainless is normally 10′ x 4′ at what ever thickness you want, yes, thats feet.  My band saw only has capacity to cut 12″ max.  So what does one do?  Break out the Plasma Cutter and whittle it down to [...]

Just having some fun….

March 17, 2009

One thing nice about being a metal smith, taking a break away from just making jewelry and expanding the scope of work, diversifying into other markets, and quite frankly just having some fun.  I had some grade 5 6Al 4V Titanium laying around the shop, so I decided to make some gadgetry.  Guys LOVE gadgets… [...]

Sometimes fear is all you need…

February 24, 2009

Creating a show piece is a daunting endeavor, exposing ones self to the critical eye of the judge can evoke many emotions.  Putting yourself, your work, your craftsmanship out into the world for all to see.  It can either have two outcomes…one of success and one of failure, that is not what I am afraid [...]
