The annealed metal is placed in a sandwich between soft 'pusher' paper and a hard paper which will serve as a monoprint paper die to emboss the metal sheet. The metal may be pre-polished.... (1990) Complete Story

The motivation for undertaking this research was to establish a more expedient process to achieve volumetric forms in non ferreous metals. With the availability of commercial seamless tubings it seemed logical to develop working techniques adapted to this resource. I became involved in blacksmithing in 1971 and while developing the working technology of this area I began to realize that many of the processes of blacksmithing and silversmithing could be incorporated to work copper and copper alloys while in a heated state. This paper will deal with the application of shaping non ferreous metals by forging and upsetting, by forming through sinking, capping, stretching, raising and pressing, and by bending, misting, cutting, punching, drifting, stamping, chasing, chiseling and rasping while at a red heat. Fabrication techniques of heated metal will also be discussed. There are no new discoveries in the process, but the research lies in the investigation. The numerous visual possibilities which occur are not possible to achieve without these applications..... (1977) Complete Story
This story details manufacturing and assembly steps for a cultured baroque pearl necklace with yellow gold design elements. pearl necklace. White pearls threaded on gold wire bridge the colored-pearl-accented gold center and side pieces. Pearls alternating with gold roundels are strung on silk using traditional methods to complete the necklace pattern.... (2007) Complete Story
describe here some broad practical steps in making an acetate spectacle frame by hand. For a brief comparison let's consider the way acetate frames are often made. In the spectacle industry the typical factory set-up involves dozens of pre-set routing and heat-forming/embedding machines to produce each frame design. Designs must be guarranteed of commercila success to pay for this huge set-up cost, and must fit into the parameters of the machinery. Making by hand has all the attributes and advantages that a factory cannot afford: greatest flexibility of design, quickest speed of reaction to customer/market requirements, and total uniqueness. The downside is that handmade frames take time to make, the runs are small, and the maker must be skilful. Sound familiar? Let's press on undaunted anyway; the rewards are fulfilling....
