Silverfoot,

Unfortunately I am not close enough to help you out in person, but I
think I can point you in the right direction...

My students always whine because the first three days of my engraving
workshops are dedicated to making, shaping, and sharpening
    gravers....

But then, on the fourth day, they begin to understand that these
skills are the most important part of the workshop. Tedious as they
might seem in the beginning, there isn't much you can do with a
graver that has the wrong angles and is not sharpened properly.
(Besides, a really sharp graver hardly hurts at all when you stick it
in your hand:) - at least not as much as a dull one!)

See if you can obtain a copy of the GRS graver sharpening video.
Although I do not agree with all of the ideas presented in it, it
will get you started, and they do work. (It will have to do until I
get my own video on the market:)

They are trying to sell you the tools that they make - but you can
    get by without 'em.

If, after you've seen it, you still need help - let me know...
Meantime, if you want to send me a rough idea of how you are
sharpening your gravers, what materials you are trying to cut, and
some idea of what specific problems you are having - I'll see how I
    can help from a distance.
