    Yes, I can see how the process COULD be used to deceive people, but
    as many experts and keen amateurs in digital photography have stated,
    digital manipulation is a must in order to achieve realistic images.
    It seems extremely rare that the picture you take with your D-SLR is
    actually a true representation of the colours you were looking at in
    real life. And any glossy magazine advert for pieces of jewellery
    will most surely have been tweaked to get the image that ends up in
    the magazine. 

    I commented to my husband about my frustration that one must tweak
    images from digital cameras and that you never had to do that with
    film cameras, but as he said, all that was done by the lab. He once
    bought me all the lab equipment for processing my film images,
    thinking I'd be interested in it as a hobby but sadly I never got
    into it. But indeed it had all the equipment necessary for tweaking
    the various colours, exposure, etc, etc, so playing with an image to
    achieve something close to reality is nothing new.
