Jamie, I honestly don't know where the "commercial usage" disclaimer
originates from but as someone noted, a lot of manufacturers, like
the shed manufacturer, use it as well to discourage folks from making
their own businesses from other's products.

I certainly intend readers and students to use techniques presented
and in fact, I make several finished jewelry pieces for the workshops
I teach. I do this because I understand that it takes awhile, once
you learn a new technique, to assimilate it into your own work and
more or less find your way with it. The pieces are there for
inspiration and direct copy if desired for learning purposes. Maybe
it's just me, but I don't really consider those workshop jewelry
pieces "my own work". There's a clear distinction in my own head.

Now, if one of the students chooses to completely copy those pieces
and start their own business from it, my first thought is that I
failed to get that student to find their own style with the
technique. My second thought is usually, gee, couldn't they find
something more creative/original to do if they wanted to start their
own business? Personally, I'd be embarased to do that......not to
mention that I would have entirely missed the essence of artistic
learning............the challenge of making something my own.
