                                        The Jazz-Man

He was born in Wales, a division of the United Kingdom in S.W. Great
Britain. In 1966, in Canterbury, an English Jazz group was formed by the
name of Soft Machine. Soft Machine got its name from that old and venerable
writer, William Burroughs. And, may I also add my own two cents here and
say that Burroughs was and is, though a tad strange, easily one of the
American greats in literature. Soft Machine became one of the most
adventurous, influential and endearing of English fusion groups. Our
Welshman joined this group, and its early recordings are considered
representative of its most inventive works.

Information on our composer is quite scarce...but I gleaned what I could as
he is, in his own way, directly related to our industry. He has quite a
little history. He has conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra. And
though a jazz enthusiast--he began playing as a university student--I would
venture to say he is most widely known across this country and perhaps the
    world, for his classical compositions.

Aside from being a composer, he is also a musician and plays the saxophone
and the oboe and the keyboard. For you jazz aficionados, he recorded
Elastic Rock in 1970 and worked with Julia Tippetts and Keith Tippetts and
    the London Jazz Composers Orchestra.

He became the joint leader of Soft Machine from 1977 forward in
conjunction with John Marshall. In 1981, when Soft Machine was disbanded,
he worked with Mike Rutledge composing and recording music for film,
    television, and the theater.

In 1995 our JazzMan's recording of Adiemus--Songs of Sanctuary, topped the
pop and classical charts of Europe and Japan. And now for the meat of it
    all.

I don't have the exact date that he composed a piece called Palladio. Our
JazzMan's name is Karl Jenkins. And an excerpt from the Allegretto from the
Palladio, which he performed in a campaign that started sometime in 1995,
has become the musical signature for DeBeers Diamonds. It is available, for
those who want to buy it, on a CD from Sony entitled Diamond Music.

A special thanks to a young lady named Ellen who led me to this
    information.

And there ya have it.
That's it for this week folks.
Catch you all next week.

Take care,
Benjamin Mark
